The grace and guiding nature of God is only made apparent when we are in acceptance of our own imperfections. Even in one of the most influential leaders of the early Christian church, the Apostle Paul was taught his own lesson to be grounded, and his subsequent realisation of his own flaws gave Paul the vision to give ever more, his praise to God. In 2 Corinthians 12:1-10, Paul was shown a heavenly vision and great revelations that he was not permitted to reveal to others. To prevent Paul from developing a sense of conceited self-importance, the plead from Paul to remove his “thorn in the flesh” was denied. "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me." (2 Corinthians 12:9).
At times it is the strive for perfection itself that may detach one’s relationship with God. To be always reaching for that piece of ‘unattainable’ within us, we neglect to see God’s guiding path for us. The Perfect Cross symbolically embodies this through the use of two contrasting hand-applied high polish and matte textures in the metal. And just like in the jewellery, the matte finishing represents the ‘unfinished’ or ‘imperfections’ in our lives. Like Paul, as we begin to accept our innate imperfections, we stop trying to do God’s work but rather we place our faith in him and let him, guide us instead.
