The thorn is representative of the weeds that were sown as a result of original sin from Adam and Eve. “Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field” (Genesis 3:18). The thorns are not designed to cause any major harm but rather were symbolic of an uncomfortable prick or reminder of these sins. Later, it would be Jesus who would be wearing thorns during his crucifixion. “So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” (John 19:5). Jesus wearing the crown of thorns accepted his crucifixion so that the sins of humanity could be washed away. And through removing the curse and badge of sin, he has brought upon us God’s blessing.
The object of a ring itself is symbolic of eternity as it has no beginning and no end. The Crown of Thorns Ring contains a break within the ring, but its circular eternity is completed through the thorns themselves. This is to symbolise that true eternal love that is from God so that we may receive salvation through his grace. The hand-etched pattern whilst providing a textural contrast is representative of the scourging that Jesus received; the pain endured for the purity of humanity.
